Using Augmented Reality for Virtual Home Visits in Kinship Care Assessments

Augmented Reality (AR) is an innovative technology that overlays digital information—such as images, text, or graphics—onto real-world environments in real-time. This technology enhances the physical space during virtual home visits, allowing Independent Assessors to conduct detailed walk through's of homes while identifying and recording potential risks or concerns. At One Future, we’ve integrated AR into our virtual assessment framework, offering a more thorough and interactive way to assess homes for kinship care placements.

With AR, assessors can mark potential hazards, like poor childproofing or safety risks, directly onto the live video feed during the home visit. These markers are recorded, creating a detailed video that can be referenced later by DCJ or OOHC case managers. This feature ensures that case managers can revisit the home environment virtually, allowing for ongoing monitoring of any issues flagged during the initial visit.

Importantly, One Future provides this AR and video home assessment at no additional cost. It’s a key benefit to the DCJ or OOHC case manager, offering an objective record of the home that can be revisited at any time. This ensures transparency and helps case managers track whether identified risks are addressed over time, contributing to more informed decisions about the child’s care and safety.

Consent is a priority for One Future when using these digital tools. Before any recording of a home visit takes place, we always seek and obtain explicit consent from the family. This ensures that families are fully informed and comfortable with the process. We explain the purpose of the recording, how it will be used, and who will have access to it, ensuring complete transparency throughout the assessment.

By offering AR and video home assessments, One Future is committed to providing an advanced, accessible, and thorough assessment process that enhances the safety and well-being of children in kinship care, while always respecting the rights and privacy of families.
